This project focuses on enhancing classroom efficiency and increasing student engagement in Korean language learning by leveraging AI for class management and content accessibility.

Project background

Client: Munacademy, based in Osaka, Japan

They offer both remote and on-site Korean language tutoring.

Munacademy has two problems.

  • Students view Korean as a hobby, leading to lower motivation and a desire to minimize study time.

  • They seek to improve their speaking ability with a real Korean accent.

Needs

Teachers and students have different needs.

Teachers:

  • Centralized storage for class content and feedback.

  • Tools to motivate students to attend and engage with lessons.

  • Ensure students retain key phrases by the end of each class.

  • A platform for easy communication and feedback sharing among teachers.

Students:

  • Easy access to previous class content for on-the-go review.

  • Engaging and enjoyable learning experience.

  • Speak with a real Korean accent, especially for travel-related interactions in Korea.

An all-in-one platform where teachers can manage class content and students can review lessons with AI-generated voice files.

  • Students can listen to example sentences in an AI-generated Korean voice, with the option to download the files for offline study, especially catering to the student demographic (mainly in 40s- 50s).

  • Teachers can upload feedback after each class, helping students track their progress and providing other teachers with insights for creating personalized study plans.

AI study chatbot

A chatbot designed to assist students with self-study by generating example sentences based on expressions learned in class.

Students can input phrases, and the chatbot will provide various examples, deepening their understanding and usage.

Feedback & Challenges

Feedbacks from peer group and from client

  • Managing access to the application when students discontinue classes.

    Solution: User permissions can be controlled directly within the Glide app, allowing easy management of access.

  • Ensuring that the AI-generated voice maintains a proper Korean accent to avoid students learning incorrect pronunciations.

    Solution: Developed a prompt guideline specifically for generating accurate Korean pronunciations through AI, ensuring the voice output is reliable.

  • Difficulty in assessing each student's language level and generating sentences tailored to their proficiency.

    Solution: While still in progress, the system is being programmed to generate example sentences based on the user’s selected proficiency level, offering tailored learning experiences for each student.

Collaboration approach

  • Agile Workflow: Weekly meetings were held with the client to present progress, gather feedback, and find solutions to challenges as they arose.

  • Client-Centered Development: The application was customized to meet the unique needs of Munacademy, ensuring it aligned perfectly with their requirements.

  • Real-World Testing: The prototype was developed into a fully functional application, tested by the client, with beta testing planned for a select group of 5 students.
